OBA of Benin, Omo N’Oba Ewuare II, has said unless the issue of corruption was tackled with all the serious it deserved and the economy improved, it will be difficult to fight human trafficking in the country.
Oba Ewuare II of Benin The Benin monarch made the observation when the Director-General of National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, Dame Julie Okah-Danli visited him at his palace in Benin City.
He called on the state and federal governments to fight corruption, provide jobs, improve the economy and make life meaningful for the people in order to discourage them from embarking on illegal migration and human trafficking.
He enjoined NAPTIP to work closely with Oba Ewuare II Foundation in order to eradicate the scourge in the society and assured of the readiness of the palace to collaborate with the state and federal governments to stamp out human trafficking through advocacy, enlightenment and persuasion.
Earlier, Director-General of NAPTIP, Dame Okah- Donli said they were in the palace as part of NAPTIP’s enlightenment campaign, pointing out that so much had been said and linked to Edo State with regard to human trafficking.
She told the Oba that many Nigerians have been held in Libya, adding that the Federal Government has done a lot to bring them back and rehabilitate them.
