Lagos State Government has told owners of some unclaimed shops at the Tejuosho market to occupy their allotted shops or risk forfeiture to the state government.
The state government noted that the failure to occupy the shops in markets made many traders to engage in illegal trading on road medians and walkways, which has caused gridlock and accidents.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami, stated this during a sensitisation tour on street trading, low occupancy of shops and Cleaner Lagos Initiative at Tejuosho market in the Surulere Local Government Area.
Folami said the government would not condone disobedience to the law banning street trading, adding that it did not align with the vision of transiting from a megacity to a smart city.
“Our roads and streets are not meant for trading. Traders selling on roads and neglecting the markets built by government are violating the laws; such traders are at risk. Traders at Tesuosho market should occupy their shops or they will lose them,” he said.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Cleaner Lagos Initiative, Adebola Shabi, said traders were responsible for 45 per cent of waste.
Shabi advised traders to stop patronising cart pushers, saying unlawful waste disposal could cause environmental hazards.
